The nautical flag is flown on a mast at the stern (rear) of the ship and is used to indicate the nationality of the ship. In some cases, the nautical flag may also contain the coat of arms or emblem of the country.

The use of the nautical flag is mandatory in most countries and is a common practice in shipping. The nautical flag is also used in international sailing events, such as regattas and sailing competitions, to identify the nationality of the participating boats.
